Gum Disease, Kernersville, NC

Your oral health is important, so do what you can to prevent gum disease.

Gum disease — It’s a scary word that can send anyone into a panic. We hear about it often in any dental office – pamphlets, plaques, and even cards scattered throughout the office offering tidbits of advice on how to avoid it and warning signs that you may have it. While plaque is the primary cause, there are other factors that should be mentioned, too:

Gum Disease in Kernersville, North Carolina

  • Hormonal changes
  • Illnesses, such as diabetes, HIV, and cancer
  • Medications
  • Bad habits, such as smoking and chewing tobacco
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Family history

Despite all of these factors, gum disease can be avoided for the most part. It all comes down to care. If you can relate with the above factors, there are ways that you can avoid gum disease. Be aware and speak with your doctor and dentist on how you can take additional steps to avoid gum disease. For everyone else, make sure that you brush and floss regularly. This will remove plaque buildup and prevent the risk of gum disease from occurring. And again, be aware. If you’re noticing a receding of the gum line, sensitivity in your teeth, or bleeding, swollen gums, give us a call at Michael S. Spangler, DDS, PA.
