Family Dentistry Tips: Threats to
Dental Health

One of the saddest things in the world is doing something you thought was safe, or having a particular lifestyle, and finding out later that there were potential side effects that you weren’t aware of. When it comes to your dental health, there are several family dentistry tips you should know about if you want to prevent problems and enjoy the best possible oral health. While some of these may not be enough to change your mind, and that’s perfectly fine when it is a personal decision, you’ll at least know what to watch for so you can discuss it with your family dentistry professional.

family dentistry professional can do to minimize the threats to your dental health

  • Smoking- Smokers are 3 to 6 times more likely to experience advanced gum disease because tobacco products speed up the progression of gum disease. There is also increased likelihood of severe bone loss. Treatments for gum disease are hampered by smoking, as well. In addition, the risk of mouth cancer is higher with added risk of secondary cancers, including the throat and larynx, not to mention other organs in the body. There are also oral health dangers involved with smokeless tobacco, and there are ongoing studies to determine the oral effects of e-cigarettes.
  • Drug Use- There is some indication that marijuana can also lead to oral health issues. In addition, the use of methamphetamine nearly always destroys teeth due to rampant tooth decay.
  • Obesity- There are some links between oral bacteria and periodontal disease with obesity. It is not yet known why obesity results in higher concentrations of bacteria in the saliva, but it would seem that controlling your weight or taking added measures with dental care is critical.
  • Oral Piercings- There are many potential risks with oral piercings that can affect your oral health, including infection, gum injury, damaged teeth, swelling, blood-borne diseases, endocarditis, prolonged bleeding, and others. You should see your family dentistry professional if you experience any adverse reactions.
  • Other Activities- There is always ongoing research into other things that can affect dental health. Nail biting, addictions, certain teething gels and tablets, scuba diving, and other unique situations may have an impact. That is why no matter how you live your life, regular visits with your family dentistry professional are important, as well as providing them with a full medical history.
